Records received in 1984, boxes 1-4, 1971-1980, contain correspondence,research papers, agendas, proposals, reports, and work plans that document Energy Laboratory research projects including Magnetohydrodynamic Power Generation, 1971-1979, the Combined Cycles Research Program, 1976-1979, and a Fluidized Bed Combustion Modeling Project, 1976-1978; also administrative records describing Jean F. Louis's role as director of the Energy Laboratory's Fossil Fuel Technology Program (later the Energy Conservation Program) from 1974 to 1979, and his involvement in the organization of the University Coal Research Consortium of New England from 1978 to 1980. Records received in 1989, boxes 5-11, 1973-1986, contain administrative material including a 1973 report on the organization and purpose of the laboratory, records of the lab's executive committees, and budget information. Correspondence with government agencies, including the Department of Energy and the Energy Research and Development Administration, and companies, including Exxon and General Electric, and the director's chronological file, 1973-1986, document the laboratory's research activities.

Ernest Moniz was born in Fall River, Massachusetts, in 1944. He graduated from Boston College with a degree in physics in 1966 and then received his PhD in theoretical physics from Stanford University in 1972. The following year, he joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). At MIT, Moniz became the Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Physics and Engineering Systems.
